Ubuntu

We directly used the very latest version 8.04 Beta, because delivery will be in few days from today.

First you check for the availability of propriatary drivers:

ATI and nVidia are both available in Ubuntu distributions, both are also 3D capable. Select your VGA card type and install the driver:

After installation you must reboot your system (rember those old days where you had to do this daily?)

After restart you select Synaptic Package Manager to install compiz. Select:

  • compiz

  • emerald

  • fusion icon.

The other packeages will automatically selected via dependencies:

When you're done, Select:

Applications System Tools Compiz Fusion

A new Icon will show up in the upper right corner:

Use the Emerald Theme Manager to select your favorite theme.

Now it's time to activate the 3D Options:

Select:

  • Desktop Cube

  • Rotate Cube

as a first start. For further options you are on your own, according your own „taste“.

Some modifications might work right away, on some you have to right click the fusion icon and „Reload Window Manager“.

You see, not a big deal on Ubuntu.
